VALUE OF THE MONTH FOR MAY

To Promote Conservation and Protect the Environment

EARTH DAY - 22 APRIL 2025

As we reflect on Earth Day, observed each year on the 22nd of April, it's a meaningful time to pause and appreciate all that our planet gives us. In line with this month’s Value, Earth Day reminds us to reflect on our relationship with the natural world and consider how we can contribute to its preservation.

The challenges we face globally, such as biodiversity loss and climate change, affect us all, from individuals to organisations. This shared impact means we also share a collective responsibility to make a difference, however small our actions may seem. At The Royal Portfolio, we take this responsibility seriously, not just as a company, but as a group of people who care deeply about our environment and our future.

The travel and tourism industry is increasingly recognising the importance of sustainability. Here in South Africa, we are privileged to be surrounded by stunning natural beauty, landscapes and ecosystems that people travel from around the world to experience. This growing awareness is shaping a global shift toward what is known as responsible tourism, an approach that actively minimises negative social, environmental, and economic impacts, while promoting positive, lasting benefits.

At The Royal Portfolio, we are proud of the work already being done through our Foundation to support both community development and conservation. Looking ahead, we’re placing an even greater focus on environmental responsibility, being mindful of our water and electricity use, reducing waste, and ensuring we operate as efficiently as possible. The goal is to maintain our exceptional guest experience while lightening our environmental footprint.

Thank you all for continuing to uphold the values that make our company not only a leader in luxury hospitality but also a responsible steward of the natural world we’re so lucky to call home.

PRIMROSE HOUSE

Human Resources

It’s been a lively and engaging time at HQ recently, and we’re excited to share a few updates from the past few weeks. We kicked things off with a fun and energetic Easter egg hunt centered around our Vision, Purpose, and Values. It brought a great burst of team spirit to the office, with everyone dashing around in search of hidden treats. In the end, Adrian Kaplan (Executive Head of Marketing) and Nataline Collins (Junior Reservations Agent) emerged as the winners, having discovered the majority of the eggs.

We’ve also officially launched our staff engagement survey for this quarter. The survey is being conducted via Connecteam, and we encourage everyone to take part. It can be completed either through the online portal or directly from your mobile phone. The feedback collected is incredibly important, it helps us understand where we’re doing well, where we can improve, and how we can better support you. Please do share your honest feedback and comments. The deadline to complete the survey is 17h00 on the 09th of May.

A big thank you goes out to Adrian Kaplan (Executive Head of Marketing) and the Marketing team for the excellent sessions on the TRP Brand. If you haven’t attended it yet, we highly recommend watching the recorded session, it’s an informative guide to understanding and representing our brand in the right way. Building on that, please be sure to join the other training opportunities throughout May:

Marketing

It’s been another dynamic and productive month for our marketing team, with a wide range of exciting updates and achievements across media, content, digital performance, and brand storytelling. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a strong stream of media coverage continuing to flow in for various properties, particularly Franschhoek House, which remains a standout with several features in prominent international publications. We’re seeing increased interest not only from the USA and Europe but also from media outlets in the East and South America. The Silo has also received consistent attention, especially in articles centered on art and guest experience.

Our blog content continues to play a key role in driving visibility through SEO, helping bring more eyes to our website and boosting our online reach. This month, we expanded our storytelling for Farmstead with a beautiful piece themed around honeymoons, elopements, and intimate gatherings. We also featured a detailed look at our private residences in Hermanus.

A notable highlight was the publication of our first guest blog, which adds genuine, personal perspectives to our content. Written by Sean Godfrey, the Season 4 winner of MasterChef South Africa, this post shared a heartfelt story of his family’s weekend escape to La Residence. His reflections brought warmth and authenticity to our platform and gave readers a unique, guest-centered look into the experience we offer.

We’ve also been working behind the scenes to elevate our sales presentations. These now follow two tracks: an educational version for those new to The Royal Portfolio, offering core facts and insights, and a more visual, emotionally driven presentation for those already familiar with our brand. The goal is to move beyond numbers and features, and instead bring to life the true essence of what makes our properties unforgettable. Feedback will guide us as we continue refining both versions in the weeks ahead.

Email campaigns have also been in full swing. Masiya’s Camp has been the focus of two mailers so far, with striking imagery captured by Lourenco Afonso (Wildlife Photographer and Social Media Content Creator), and we’re gearing up for an official shoot with Greg Cox. These campaigns are already receiving strong engagement. We also sent out a broader emailer for Royal Malewane, which highlighted everything from the conservation and research centre to guest features, with a guide on packing for safari.

Other recent projects include a comprehensive art folder for Franschhoek House, with detailed descriptions of every artwork on the property. Dean, our Cape-based photographer, captured each piece beautifully, and this collection will become part of the property's official catalogue.

In Hermanus, we welcomed two new private residences, Light House and Voelklip House, into our portfolio. Following a professional shoot, we’ve rolled out updated photography, fact sheets, and sales materials to fully support their marketing launch.

We’ve also refreshed activities brochures for Franschhoek House, with updated content on both property experiences and regional attractions. At La Residence, we created new children’s activity collateral to support our growing focus on family travel. And at The Silo Hotel, we’ve produced a series of short video clips and new photography for the spa, which will be rolled out gradually to enhance the guest journey and bring the spa’s relaxing atmosphere to life online.

On the digital front, our social media performance has shown impressive growth. Comparing April last year to April this year, we’ve seen a major boost in impressions, link clicks, and—most importantly, engagement, which is up by over 450%. Engagement remains the most valuable metric in social media, as it reflects meaningful interactions like likes, shares, comments, and saves. This tells us that our content is connecting with audiences and encouraging real action.

Key highlights in our social media storytelling include more posts for Masiya’s Camp, particularly one explaining the story behind its name, which received incredible feedback. We’ve also featured new reels on Franschhoek House and the Vineyard Suites, plus fresh content for The Silo Hotel’s spa and our private residences.

And finally, Lourenco Afonso (Wildlife Photographer and Social Media Content Creator) has delivered yet again with a stunning new set of wildlife and property images, capturing the spirit of Masiya’s Camp with dramatic lighting and beautiful detail, from moody forest shots to striking images of the camp’s bar and wildlife moments.

Thank you all for your continued support as we share the beauty and uniqueness of The Royal Portfolio with the world. It’s a pleasure bringing these stories to life.

Sales

First, we want to take a moment on behalf of the entire sales team to extend a heartfelt thank you to our marketing colleagues. The Marketing team consistently deliver whatever we need, often before we even ask, and always with patience and a smile (even when we might be testing that patience a little!). Your support truly makes a difference, and we’re grateful.

As for April, it was another busy month on the Sales front, with a strong focus on diversifying our source markets. While a significant share of our revenue continues to come from the US, we are deliberately expanding our reach. Hoon Kim (Sales Manager - Asia Pacific) represented us at the Arabian Travel Market, where he explored opportunities across the Middle East. Meanwhile, Felipe Bonahora (Sales Manager - Latin America) was actively working the South American market, including a round of sales calls and attendance at ILTM Latin America.

This week, most of the sales team is participating in We Are Africa, a key event for the luxury travel sector. Nigel Pace (Executive Head of Marketing) and others are dividing their time between the conference and hosting site inspections at The Silo Hotel, where drop-ins are common and always welcome. We ensure we have team members on standby to guide visitors through the property, it’s an essential touchpoint that often sparks meaningful interest.

Next week, as others take a well-earned breather, Nigel Pace (Executive Head of Sales) and Ian Taylor (Sales and Revenue Manager) will step in to attend the Travel Indaba in Durban. Between meetings and networking sessions, we’ll be continuing the momentum and ensuring TRP is well represented.

One group from Travel Beyond, one of our biggest US accounts, visited Royal Malewane, and the team did an outstanding job showcasing the property. Meanwhile, Anton Noll (Sales Manager - UK and Europe) hosted representatives from Pure Escapes at La Residence. This is a key account with strong ties to Europe and Russia, again underscoring our broader market approach.

More fam trips are on the horizon, so expect plenty of photos and stories in the next edition of HQ News. A big thank you to all the properties for your role in making these site visits seamless and special. And finally, a special shoutout to Fairoza Isaacs (Sales Co-ordinator) and Palesa Madoda (Reservations Agent - Agents and Media), the quiet powerhouses behind the scenes who coordinate all the logistics and moving parts of these visits. Your work is meticulous and essential, and we appreciate you deeply.

Events

April was filled with some more special events, we hosted a bridal shower and a baby shower at the Vineyard Venue, and funnily enough, both had the same theme and colour palette, which made things flow beautifully (and made the photography much simpler!). Special shoutout to Nuzaan Magier (Junior Duty Manager), who ran one of the events completely solo, she did a fantastic job!

We also had the pleasure of hosting a very exciting corporate retreat at Birkenhead House. The group had a packed schedule with back-to-back activities, and the energy was amazing. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, they were so well taken care of and are already planning a return visit. One of the standout experiences was mussel picking with Clive Biggs (Head Chef) and we also had a food and wine pairing event hosted by Wayve Kolevsohn (Group Beverage Manager), and a particularly special new addition to our offering: a “Morning of Mindfulness”. This included beach walks, breathing exercises, and Cliff Path strolls. It was deeply grounding for the group and added a truly unique dimension to their stay.

And then… a magical moment: we hosted a proposal! It had been in the works for months. John coordinated everything, and on the day, nerves were high, but it was a picture-perfect success. The bride-to-be was completely surprised, and even one of the other guests nearby was so moved she ended up in tears. The couple couldn’t stop expressing their gratitude, and the entire team truly went above and beyond to make it unforgettable.

PROPERTIES UPDATE

Birkenhead House

Just a quick reminder of how breathtaking Birkenhead House remains, even in the heart of winter. This photo says it all, crisp skies, golden light, and the magic of the ocean right outside.

April started off beautifully with an Easter breakfast that Nicola Koegelenberg (Pastry Chef) brought to life with charm and delicious flair, think fresh-baked cakes, hot cross buns, croissants, and biscuits. Guests were delighted, and it truly set the tone for a warm, festive long weekend.

We were also honoured to host RMC members Dawn and Vincent Murphy. Vincent surprised his wife with a birthday trip for her 60th and we gifted them a heartfelt card and present, and the team went the extra mile to make the moment special.

The Travel Beyond fam trip was full of energy. From mussel picking and cooking classes with Clive Biggs (Head Chef), to surfing lessons and elegant dinners hosted by Edward Morton (Ambassador), it was a memorable visit.

Zach Tate and Robyn Scott also enjoyed mussel picking and made full use of our spa facilities. It was wonderful to see how engaged and appreciative they were throughout their stay.

Our team continues to shine in living out our purpose and values. From heartfelt guest farewells to our team-wide Easter egg hunt, the spirit of Birkenhead House is as strong as ever. Special recognition goes to Victor’s management course participants, our future leaders in action.

We welcomed Wayve Kolevsohn (Group Beverage Manager) twice in April, once for menu training and again for a wine tasting. Her contributions are always valued!

Congratulations to Joseph Mati (Handyman), our well-deserved “Man of the Match.” We also celebrated the return of Sinaku Kopeshe (Housekeeping Supervisor) from maternity leave, with the team presenting a small gift on behalf of the team to welcome her and her new baby boy.

Our commitment to community remains strong. Twice a month, we serve meals at the night shelter, where the feedback from recipients is deeply touching, they say it’s the best meal they get all month. Staff love participating, and the smiles say it all. Edward Morton (Ambassador) also visited Masibulele Crèche to see how we continue supporting our little ones. Lastly, we welcomed Aunty Shirley, our new outsourced florist, who’ll be adding her floral touch to Birkenhead House from now on.

The Silo Hotel

Starting with a few moments of guest delight, we’re proud to share three recent reviews, one from each of our outlets: The Granary Cafe, The Royal Tea, and The Rooftop. All of them scored a full five out of five for food, value, service, ambiance, and welcome. One guest even said it was the best experience they’ve had.

One guest celebrating their 35th birthday requested a surprise cake, which the pastry team brought to life beautifully. The top left and bottom corners of the slide show the inspiration they worked from, and the result was not only visually stunning but also deeply appreciated by the guest. We also celebrated the Thai New Year from the 13th to 15th of April with a traditional handwashing ceremony and some lovely snacks prepared for our Thai guests. They were incredibly moved by the recognition and care shown. Over Easter weekend, our team made the most of the sunshine with poolside Easter Bunny visits and sweet treats, including cookies and chocolates, lovingly prepared by the pastry team. Guests enjoying the view were also surprised with a romantic turndown setup that added a magical touch to their stay. Huge appreciation goes to our concierge and housekeeping team for orchestrating those memorable moments.

The spirit of Easter extended to our team, too. We hosted an Easter egg hunt across the property, with plenty of excitement, hot cross buns and a large chocolate Easter creation.

It’s also been a big month for development and opportunity. Yamkela Gantsho, Zimi Sitofile, Pakamani Mphoswa and Nonkululeko Mateke will be competing on the 10th of May in the Reaching for Young Stars program, where they'll showcase their talent in cooking, baking, and wine pairing alongside other culinary schools. We’re wishing them all the best.

And congratulations to Kholiswa Makeleni (Chef de Partie), our 2024 Chef of the Year! She’s heading to Dubai for a three-week internship as part of her prize. She leaves on Thursday, 8th of May, and we’re incredibly excited for all she’ll learn, and bring back to inspire us.

On the community side, we visited Leliebloem as part of our regular outreach, sharing Easter eggs, snacks, and a lot of dancing with the children. It was a joyful day for everyone involved.

Meanwhile, Michael Jacobs (Art Concierge and Guest Liaison) led two school groups on an inspiring art tour of the Zeitz MOCAA Museum and our property. The schools sent warm thanks, praising his passion and depth of knowledge. Thank you, Michael, for representing us so well.

La Residence

April was a busy and rewarding month, and we received wonderful feedback from our guests. It's always special when they mention team members by name. So from all of us, a heartfelt well done to the entire team. You make us proud, and thank you for always creating a complete and memorable guest experience. We also had to include a little brag moment for Sheryldine Maree (Hotel Florist), whose stunning floral installation at the main entrance has been turning heads. She’s experimenting with new styles, and it’s truly joyful and beautiful, thank you, Sherry!

We had some Easter fun too. Along with an Easter egg hunt, we also had a guessing competition to see who could guess how many eggs were hidden. Anri Potgieter (Student Chef) won this time, getting the closest to the correct number and walking away with the lovely prize. Our purpose and value Easter egg hunt also took place over the Easter weekend, and the team really enjoyed getting involved.

We also hosted members of The Silo Hotel team for a site inspection. Thank you so much for the beautiful feedback sent afterwards, it was lovely having you with us, and we can’t wait to return the visit soon.

Theo Jefthas continues to be our most passionate Front of House Supervisor when it comes to taste tests—he keeps everyone on their toes and does a brilliant job. Thank you, Theo, for going above and beyond and sharing your knowledge so generously.

We would also like to share a special photo of Charlotte Paul (Sous Chef), only 17 or 18 at the time, with guests Randy and Andy. This was back at the old La Residence. She’s still with us today and just as passionate about cooking and hospitality. Thank you, Charlotte, for staying true to your love for what we do.

Easter looked a little different this year because we hosted a large kosher group from the Prager family. It was quite an operation, with 120 pieces of luggage, one lost kippa, three helicopters (actually six), one Cape cobra, 17 meals, two DJs, two kiddushes, one magician, one youth choir, 142 boxes of matzo, one temple, and one rabbi, all for 56 very happy kosher guests. It was a big learning curve and a ton of hard work, but the team handled it brilliantly. The guests were thrilled and are already talking about coming back next year.

We’re continuing our efforts to improve our recycling initiatives. It’s not 100% there yet, but everyone is working really hard. Kitchen waste is being separated and sent to the Farm Sanctuary for the animals and composting. We’re also recycling hard plastics, cans, and tins. Huge thanks to everyone involved for pushing this forward. We’re also working with our local school to help two talented netball players join a sponsorship program that could take them to Dubai. We’re holding thumbs that we can make this happen for them.

On the operations side, Franschhoek House is almost finished with snagging. The driveway lights have been installed and look beautiful. The landscaping is looking incredible and most of the bone construction and installations are nearly done.

We’ve had a number of staff and their families from other properties visit us, always a joy to host our own and share what we do here. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

The front office team has done a fantastic job updating the curio shop. We've refreshed the product range and redesigned the displays. In April, we brought in close to R300 000.00 in sales. A big round of applause to the entire team and a special mention also to Jac-Louie Manuel (Guest Relations Officer), who works his quiet magic, selling without “selling,” as Ayrton Hugo (Operations Manager) puts it.

We’ve also included some lovely photos of Franschhoek House, which continues to shine.

Royal Malewane

Malewane Lodge and Farmstead

Over Easter, we had some sweet treats waiting for our guests when they returned from safari on Easter morning. We also hosted a beautiful bush breakfast for the Stricker family as part of a 70th birthday celebration at Farmstead. The Farmhouse welcomed many families during April, and Nikita Lumb (General Manager) introduced a brand-new movie night experience for them. We set up a screen and projector, offered treats and a "build your own milkshake" station, and the kids had a great time watching movies together.

Earlier in April, we hosted a beautiful piano recital. It was an unforgettable evening with amazing music and a three-course dinner at the Malewane dining room, which the guests thoroughly enjoyed. We welcomed many wonderful guests throughout the month and received consistently positive feedback across the board.

We also had fun with our Easter egg hunt for the staff. Letitia Kleynhans (HR Generalist) and Athi Ntenda (Front Office Supervisor) painted three stones marked with numbers we did hunts for both the early and late shifts. The winners received prizes like a basket of chocolates, a spa treatment, and a lunch at Malewane Lodge.

At Africa House, we created a lovely Easter setup, complete with bunny ears on the table, which the team enjoyed. The Royal Malewane reception team also got a chance to head out on a game drive to enjoy some time in nature.

The results from the guiding team’s track and sign assessments just came through, a big well done to everyone involved in the assessments.

We're also continuing to innovate with our guest experiences. One example was a drink stop featuring homemade popcorn and little sosatie skewers cooked on a braai, which guests loved. Our Purpose & Values committee has been pushing forward with new ideas, and there’s lots of creative momentum across departments.

Emma Gelb (Sustainability Co-ordinator) visited us recently, which was a great boost to our sustainability efforts. She spent time with each department, guiding us through the responsibilities and setting up the spreadsheets needed to track our progress. We’re about to start properly separating our waste, which hasn’t happened yet, but thanks to Emma, we’re well-positioned for a strong push forward.

In terms of updates around the lodge, Royal Suite 8 got a new coat of floor paint, which has completely transformed the space, it looks absolutely stunning now. Meanwhile, the Farmstead team chipped in on some maintenance, helping with the garage door that keeps the generator cool.

And just a little something to mark World Leopard Day on the 3rd of May, we have shared a few special leopard images. To close off Malewane and Farmstead's news, we wanted to end with a story from last night’s bush dinner.

The guests from Royal Suite 1 were dining out in the bush when around 200 buffalo moved into the site, just 10 meters from the kitchen braais. We were in the process of calling for extra support when we spotted lions trailing the buffalo just behind the site. Before backup arrived, the lions charged in and started chasing the buffalo, right in front of the bush dinner setup. The guests were stunned (and thrilled), and thankfully the buffalo didn’t come crashing through the dinner site.

Waterside Lodge

To start with guest satisfaction, we had some lovely Easter celebrations for our guests, including a festive bush breakfast. Our team got into the spirit with bunny ears and cheerful outfits, earning the nickname “Bunny-believable!” It brought such a great energy to the bush. We also hosted a very special Lunar birthday celebration for the Lamb family, complete with traditional food, festive decorations, and heartfelt good fortune wishes, such a joyful occasion.

We recently welcomed the Travel Beyond fam group and treated them to a stunning bush experience. There were scenic drink stops and a beautiful bush dinner that made the evening truly memorable.

On the employee engagement side, we had an Easter egg hunt for the team. The hidden eggs featured words from our Purpose & Values, and the lucky finders were rewarded with chocolate bunnies.

Under development, our boutique team has been busy with “power of display” exercises. At one point they joked about feeling more like waiters as they repeatedly set and reset the Ardmore display table with beautiful tablecloths. But it paid off, every time they set it up, the display items sold! A big congratulations to the front office team for driving those sales and showcasing our boutique offering so well.

For innovation, we kept our value of the month, a culture of mutual respect, trust, and integrity, top of mind with a small initiative we called PS: I Appreciate You. Each staff member wrote a short note of appreciation to a teammate and someone from another department. These small gestures really lifted spirits and helped strengthen the bonds between us.

On the social responsibility front, we completed our monthly visit to the crèche. This time, we focused heavily on maintenance, replacing basins and repairing pipes. Each visit ends with a list for the next round of improvements, and we’ve got a lot more coming up that we’re excited to share next month.

And lastly, it seems like the bush dinner sites across Royal Malewane are having a very wild season! On International Leopard Day, while setting up a bush dinner, our team noticed a leopard’s unfinished meal still hanging in a tree nearby. Not long after, the leopard itself showed up. Thanks to the quick thinking of the Waterside team, we relocated the dinner setup and let the leopard enjoy his own private feast. The evening went on smoothly, and everyone got a story to tell.

Masiya's Camp

Very soon, we’ll have plenty of images to share, of our guest experiences, our beautiful dinners, and the incredible settings we’ve created out here in the bush. For now, though, I’d like to introduce you to the amazing team standing behind me. From the newest jewel in The Royal portfolio, we’re ready and eager to enrich lives through luxury travel.

FOUNDATION UPDATE

As many of you know, Leliebloem is a Child and Youth Care Centre in Cape Town that we’ve supported for some time. While it’s a space of care and refuge for children removed from unsafe home environments, one of our long-standing concerns has been: What happens when these children turn 18 and age out of the system?

As parents, many of us know that 18 is still very young, and these kids need ongoing support and guidance. That’s why we were so grateful when we were introduced to Mamelani, a wonderful organisation we've now supported for over a year. Their Youth Transition Programme helps young people bridge the daunting gap between institutional care and independent adulthood.

Mamelani equips them with life skills, mentorship, a sense of community, and much-needed emotional and logistical support, helping them build confidence, resilience, and realistic pathways for their futures.

We sponsored one young woman last year named Gadija, and her story is incredibly inspiring. She had always dreamed of becoming a social worker. After a difficult childhood, it was a social worker who gave her the strength and support she needed. Unfortunately, she didn’t achieve a bachelor's pass to attend university, and like many others, she felt lost.

That’s when Mamelani stepped in. They introduced her to auxiliary social workers, a different, but still meaningful, route into the social services field. They guided her through the application process, sourced sponsorship to pay for her course, and supported her every step of the way, including housing and occasional food parcels when needed. She completed her course, returned to her community, and even did her internship with the very social worker who had once helped her. She graduated this March. She’s a real success story, and this year, Mamelani is working with seven more young people. It’s so encouraging to know that even after they leave, these young people aren’t alone. We’ll continue supporting Mamelani this year, and we’re proud to be part of helping vulnerable youth navigate adulthood with dignity and hope.

In April, our monthly conservation talk focused on the Diederik Cuckoo, a fascinating brood parasite.

Here are a few fun facts:

  • The Diederik Cuckoo lays its eggs in other birds’ nests, often matching the egg colour of the host species (such as Cape Sparrows and Masked Weavers).

  • The unsuspecting host birds then raise the cuckoo chick as their own, feeding and caring for it as if it were their own offspring.

  • In one of the images here, you can actually see a Cape Sparrow feeding a juvenile cuckoo!

Also, in terms of educational engagement, April was a vibrant month for us. We hosted a variety of academic institutions, including:

  • University of Pretoria

  • University of the Free State

  • UNISA

  • NewBridge Graduate Institute

We also welcomed conservation teams like the APNR Ground-Hornbill Project and had both short- and long-term residents ranging from undergrad students to PhD candidates. It's been a wonderfully stimulating month filled with learning, collaboration, and some great conversations out in the field.
