VALUE OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY

To be Welcoming, Genuine and Warm, embodied by our Ambassador, Edward Morton, at Primrose House.

Masiya's Camp Update

We’re thrilled to share the latest developments at Masiya's Camp as we prepare for the grand opening on the 01st of April 2025! One of the latest additions is a beautifully designed pot placed at the entrance to the maintenance area. Tree planting is also well underway around the camp, enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Additionally, we’d like to extend a big thank you to our Marketing team for their fantastic illustration of the camp layout. Their work helps bring the vision of Masiya's Camp to life as we move closer to the opening date.

With just a short time left until the 01st of April, we wish the entire team the best of luck in these final preparations. The countdown is on, and we can't wait to see it all come together!

PRIMROSE HOUSE

Human Resources

Last week marked the bittersweet retirement of Amos Tola (Driver), who has worked with the Biden family for an incredible 38 years. While his departure is deeply felt, we are immensely grateful for his dedication and contributions over the years. We wish him nothing but happiness in this next chapter of his life.

Congratulations to Tanya Munyati (Reservations Agent), whose baby arrived early at 30 weeks in January. We’re pleased to share that both mom and baby are doing well, though the little one is still in hospital. The team recently held a baby shower to show their love and support.

Some of our Sales and Reservations team members recently visited Franschhoek House at La Residence and were thoroughly impressed with its stunning setup. We look forward to seeing the impact this beautiful property will have in the market.

A big thank you to everyone who participated in the recent Employee Engagement Survey! We achieved an 80% completion rate, which is fantastic. A special mention to Birkenhead House, which reached 100% completion.

While our culture rating came in at 81% and happiness at work at 76%, we did see a slight decline in overall engagement of 3.5% from the last survey. HR will be reviewing the feedback to identify areas for improvement and ensure we continue making TRP a great place to work.

Victor's Management & Leadership course kicked off last week, and we wish everyone enrolled the best of luck! Our regular Wednesday training sessions have also started, covering key topics to ensure your success for 2025, such as:

As Royal Malewane Lodges continues to grow, we have made some changes to the organisation structure:

A huge congratulations to Archie Maclean & Nikita Lumb on their well-deserved promotions! We look forward to seeing the lodges continue to thrive under your leadership. Thank you to everyone for your continued hard work and dedication. Let’s keep the momentum going as we step into an exciting year ahead!

Sales

The Sales team has been in full motion, covering multiple regions to strengthen relationships and drive bookings. With Werner Krause (Sales Manager - US) in the USA, Felipe Brosou (Sales manager - Latin America) in Brazil and Mexico, and Simon Mandy (Managing Director) moving between Canada and Latin America, our team is actively engaging with key markets. Anton Noll (Sales Manager - UK & Europe) recently returned from a successful European sales trip, where he introduced an agile new approach - The Sprint Trip. With demand picking up across all markets, the team is busier than ever, ensuring that TRP properties remain top of mind for our global partners.

Marketing

The Marketing team has kicked off the year with strong PR coverage across multiple global publications. Birkenhead House was featured in The Sunday Times travel supplement in the UK, while The Silo Hotel received attention in Marie Claire (Belgium) and Exclusive Tours (Czech Republic). Meanwhile, Royal Malewane made its mark in Forbes (US) and Travel & Leisure, broadening our exposure in new European markets. We’ve also seen significant local coverage on News24, particularly on conservation efforts and the expertise of our guiding team.

Our social media festive campaign was a comprehensive, multi-channel effort, featuring 15 engaging videos across Instagram and email marketing. A big thank you to everyone who contributed—your efforts ensured a seamless blend of on-property activations and brand storytelling that resonated with our audience.all

Building on the success of our video content, we’ve launched blog posts featuring Sandile Mnyuka’s (F&B Manager) journey at Birkenhead House, Nik Vounnou's (Deputy Head Guide) path to becoming a scout, and a feature on Lee-anne Sonnekus’ (Conservation and Research Centre Co-ordinator) conservation work at the CRC. These rich narratives not only drive SEO and website traffic but also deepen our brand’s emotional connection with guests and partners.

We’re intensifying efforts to promote Farmstead and Farmhouse, leveraging new photography, videos, trade presentations, and email campaigns to spotlight this gem. Results are already starting to show, reinforcing our belief that these properties deserve more attention.

The latest edition of our "A Perfect Stay" book has arrived, featuring updated imagery and new sections on Africa House and Waterside. This beautifully curated piece is now available across all our properties.

New wellness and wildlife photography by Lourenco Afonso (Wildlife Photographer and Content Creator) captures the lush landscapes and the vital conservation work happening at Royal Malewane.

Our three-day Franschhoek House shoot is in post-production, with stunning new imagery launching soon.

Our recent Graphic Design team efforts have included seasonal campaigns, property-specific creatives, and targeted F&B promotions, such as Afternoon Tea at La Residence and Valentine’s Day specials.

With ongoing marketing efforts across PR, digital, print, and social, we are ensuring TRP remains top-of-mind in key markets, while also enhancing engagement with our trade partners, guests, and local communities.

PROPERTIES UPDATE

Birkenhead House

We take great pride in ensuring our guests have an unforgettable experience. From beautifully coordinated poolside lunches to breathtaking sunrise breakfasts, every detail is carefully planned.

Our guest reviews continue to reflect our commitment, with an overwhelming 99.9% positive feedback. Guests have even shared heartfelt letters in our book. One special highlight was Simon Mcinjana’s (Tour Guide) first-ever horse-riding experience, encouraged by guests, he went the extra mile, creating a memorable moment for everyone.

Our Housekeepers have been impressing guests with their romantic and crystal turndowns, each with a unique and artistic touch. These thoughtful surprises add to the magic of a stay at Birkenhead House, and our team takes great pride in their work.

The Hibiscuses are flourishing beautifully! Posey, our outsourced Florist was here this morning and was just as relieved and delighted to see the vibrant blooms.

Exciting new plating ideas are being introduced in the kitchen, such as our fresh take on fish and chips with handpicked lemons. The team continues to refine their skills, with in-depth menu training sessions ensuring our Waiters can confidently guide guests through the dining experience.

Our Spa team has been receiving outstanding training from Babor, with Therapists gaining new skills that have led to exceptional guest feedback. Additional training by Nikita Benade (Front Office Manager) focused on pricing, cost postings, and virtuoso amenities, ensuring accuracy and seamless guest billing. These meticulous details enhance our service excellence.

Roux du Preez (Maintenance Manager) has been making notable improvements. The once-unsightly drains have been covered, creating a more polished look. Wooden tables, weathered by the sea air, have been sanded down and restored. Lighting along the front arrival/ landing strip is now fully operational, brightening up the night and enhancing the hotel’s ambiance.

We remain committed to supporting our community. We continue to serve the Night Shelter twice a month and proudly sell handmade belts and dog collars crafted by local artisans in our curio shop. Thanks to Corinne Conradie’s (Villa Manager) efforts, we also donated much-needed stationery to the Hermanus Child and Families Home, helping children start their school year with the supplies they need.

Our Spa is offering a special Valentine’s package at R4 200, which includes a Babor treatment and a luxurious body and soul gift set valued at R1 200. With several bookings already secured, the Spa team has done an exceptional job in driving this initiative. Their hard work and dedication continue to shine through in both guest experiences and financial performance.

The Silo Hotel

It's been a fantastic start to the year, and we are looking forward to an exciting journey ahead. As we reflect on recent customer experiences, we are pleased to share some noteworthy highlights. A wonderful review was shared on the Cape Town Restaurants Facebook page, known for its candid and honest feedback. A guest shared a heartwarming account of celebrating a special occasion at the Silo, describing the atmosphere, service, and food as "top-notch." This feedback reaffirms our commitment to delivering exceptional experiences.

Another memorable guest interaction involved a visitor who expressed a love for summer and watermelon. In response, our Kitchen team prepared a delightful watermelon cake during turndown service, a small yet meaningful touch that was greatly appreciated.

Our employee engagement efforts continue to thrive, with numerous Silo Stars awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions. These accolades celebrate team members who go above and beyond to assist guests, colleagues, and the community. The Silo Wellness Committee embarked on an early morning hike up Lion’s Head, while our Spa team dedicated time to showing appreciation for staff efforts during the season. A special mention goes to our Housekeeping department for their seamless teamwork and unwavering commitment, earning them the title of Best Department of the Season.

Development remains a key focus, with ongoing training and skill-sharing initiatives. Mustafa, one of our Kitchen Porters, showcased his talent by teaching Housekeeping staff how to use a sewing machine. We also celebrated Chefs Cheslin and Veronica for their eight years of service. The Housekeeping team participated in training on Unreasonable Hospitality, while Mienie Pietersen, the Housekeeper Manager from La Residence, joined us for a cross-training experience, enriching both teams with shared knowledge.

Innovation is in full swing, with the Spa introducing exquisite Valentine’s Day packages. These offerings provide a perfect opportunity for relaxation and indulgence.

On the social responsibility front, we proudly supported SANCCOB’s appeal for donations following an oil spill affecting African penguins in Hout Bay. Thanks to the generosity of our team, we contributed much-needed supplies to aid in the rescue efforts. Additionally, we continue to support Atlantic Hope, an initiative dedicated to the care of vulnerable children, with a recent update featuring two children celebrating their first day of school, a truly proud moment.

Our Social Committee has been established to foster a positive workplace environment through engaging events and activities. Led by Jessica Pohl (Concierge and Guest Relations Manager) as Chairperson, this initiative aims to strengthen team spirit and motivation.

We extend our congratulations to Sanele Nkothe (Chef de Partie), our Employee of the Month for January, whose passion and dedication to the Kitchen team have been exemplary.

Our Wellness Group is embracing the new year with enthusiasm. Andrew Damoto (Creditors and Stores Controller) recently completed the Red Hill Marathon, covering an impressive 42 kilometers. We encourage all Cape Town-based team members to join us for a refreshing hike in Newlands Forest on the 08th of February, a perfect opportunity to connect with nature and each other.

La Residence

As we step into the new year, January has already gifted us with breathtaking views and unforgettable guest experiences. The natural beauty surrounding our property continues to amaze both our guests and staff, making every moment here truly special.

We were honored to welcome back John and Gary, longtime guests who celebrated their anniversary with us. Their heartfelt message of appreciation highlighted the exceptional service they received, from warm welcomes to impeccable dining experiences. It’s always rewarding to see guests return and relive cherished memories with us. Well done to everyone involved in making their stay so memorable!

Another delightful moment was shared with a guest from China, who celebrated a birthday in a unique way. In honour of the tradition symbolising longevity, our talented Chefs prepared homemade noodles. Granville Riffel (Terrace Chef) and the Kitchen team once again exceeded expectations, leaving the guest in awe. Special menu requests have been met with great enthusiasm, and our culinary team continues to impress with their creativity and dedication.

January also marked the launch of our exciting new dinner menu. Led by Cheslin Cornelissen (Executive Chef) and his team, the menu showcases vibrant, fresh ingredients, many sourced directly from our gardens. The Kitchen team carefully prepared each dish, ensuring both front-of-house and back-of-house teams were well-versed in the new offerings. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are excited to see guests enjoy these new culinary delights.

Additionally, our front-of-house team has been engaging in a nightly wine knowledge session, focusing on our reserve wine list. This initiative has boosted confidence among our Waiters, enhancing their ability to share insights and recommendations with guests. A big well done to Ryno September (Restaurant Manager) and his team for fostering this culture of learning and excellence.

Making a difference in our community remains a core priority. In collaboration with the TRP Foundation, we had the privilege of packing and distributing 100 backpacks to Grade 1 learners at the start of the school year. Witnessing their joy was a heartwarming reminder of the impact we can make.

We also hosted the regional Principals’ meeting at our Vineyard Venue, welcoming 35 school leaders for an insightful gathering. Providing them with a well-deserved moment of appreciation was our way of acknowledging the crucial work they do in shaping the future.

We are thrilled to have completed the first official photoshoot of Franschhoek House, capturing its beauty and charm. The styling and preparation done by the team were exceptional, and we eagerly anticipate sharing the stunning professional images.

Looking ahead, preparations for Valentine's Day are in full swing. With beautifully designed menus and carefully curated experiences, we’re set to host an evening filled with love and celebration. A big thank you to our marketing team for their creativity in bringing this vision to life.

Royal Malewane

We kicked off the year with a truly magical experience for our guests. A memorable wine tasting in the bush set the tone for a romantic evening, complemented by Sydney Kgasu’s (Waiter) wine presentation and stunning scenery.

We also had the pleasure of hosting the Bergman family in the Royal Suite. Spencer, who was celebrating his 9th birthday, is an avid LA Dodgers fan. To make his day unforgettable, we arranged a surprise baseball game! Thanks to our dedicated Maintenance team, who crafted bases for the game, we even had some unexpected, wild guests, elephants, who decided to join in the fun!

The front-of-house team at Waterside has been focused on creating new experiences for our guests. From drinks and snacks before afternoon game drives to our lively Bush dinners featuring traditional singing and dancing, every detail is designed to enhance the guest journey. In addition, Daniel Mongwe, our Lodge Manager and avid runner, has introduced a unique running experience for our guests, offering them an exciting way to explore the landscape.

Sadly, we bid farewell to Petunia Mandleni (Executive Housekeeper) after nearly a decade with us, as well as Melody Nyathi, (Duty Manager) who left Malewane Lodge.

A significant focus this month has also been on upskilling. Sherine Lourens (Floor Manager), has allowed her team members to experience supervisory roles, helping them understand the responsibilities of leadership. Wonder Mlambo (Senior Bartender) also held a Cocktail masterclass for the Safari department in order to support the game drive experience.

Lee-Anne Sonnekus (Conservation and Research Centre Co-ordinator) also held a masterclass in which she shared her Foundation and community initiatives knowledge with the Waterside team.

Our team at Malewane is making exciting updates, with new wallpaper in the guest bathrooms and a refreshed look at the Spa. The Maintenance team’s hard work has led to a fresh, rejuvenated aesthetic that guests are sure to appreciate.

We also introduced a five-day rotational lunch menu at Malewane with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and Waterside showcased "Flavours of the Veld", a culinary adventure from the Cape to the Kruger, featuring regional delicacies.

In the spirit of team building, the Waterside team hosted a lovely pizza making evening for all of the senior staff members.

Our teams have also been busy maintaining the staff villages and bush dinner site with some much needed chicken runs (clean ups) as well as supporting the community and working on conservation initiatives. At the Sigagule Creche, the Waterside team helped the children with fresh fruit donations and assisted with maintenance tasks. Meanwhile, our Maintenance crew has been focused on improving access roads and constructing predator-proof fences to ensure the safety of guests and staff.

The Waterside team has started to construct a predator fence around the lodge, in addition to the elephant fence, in order to ensure everyone's safety at the lodge as the presence of Lions and Leopards has increased.

The bush has been as vibrant as ever this month. Guests have been treated to sightings of leopards, lions, wild dogs, and more. The Chinese New Year celebrations at the lodge added an extra touch of excitement, and our guests enjoyed the stunning sunsets during their stay.

FOUNDATION UPDATE

This month, we would like to shine a spotlight on one of our cherished community partners, Sihlekisi Primary School, located near Royal Malewane.

This vibrant school, filled with happy and eager learners, operates despite limited government funding. A closer look at their classroom sizes reveals the challenges they face:

  • Grade 2: 72 learners with one teacher

  • Grade 1: 80 learners with one teacher

  • Grade R: 94 learners with one teacher

To help address this, our Foundation has been funding two Teacher Assistants, allowing the school to hire two full-time Teachers. As a result, they have successfully split the Grade R and Grade 1 classes, significantly reducing the number of students per class. However, Grade 2 remains overcrowded, and we aim to extend our support there as well.

Our commitment to the students extends beyond the classroom. We previously installed a jungle gym for the Grade R learners using durable, recycled plastic materials, which have proven to be long-lasting with minimal maintenance. However, the Grade 1 and 2 students currently do not have their own play area and often compete with younger learners for space. To ensure all students have a dedicated area to play, we plan to build additional playgrounds for the older grades.

In addition, we are excited about the progress of the school’s computer lab. Our Community Enrichment Officer, Menelisi Ngomane, is stationed there daily, assisting Teachers with administrative tasks and helping students gain access to technology. While we continue to overcome challenges such as Wi-Fi access and equipment needs, we are making steady progress in creating a functional digital learning space.

Beyond classroom support, we remain actively involved in various initiatives at the Primary School:

School Maintenance: Our lodge Maintenance teams regularly assist with upkeep, ensuring the school remains a safe and pleasant environment.

Tree Planting: We have planted trees around the school and plan to expand this effort.

Educational Support: We organise Teacher training sessions, including Maths workshops, with more planned for this year.

Conservation Education: In two weeks, we will host our first group of 20 Grade 7 students at the CRC for a two-day conservation programme, culminating in an exciting game drive.

Sihlekisi Primary School plays a vital role in the bordering community, with some of our staff’s children attending the school. The warm welcome we receive every time we visit is a testament to the positive difference we are making. Our guests who visit the school also leave deeply moved, often contributing meaningful donations to support its development.
